Achilles inflammation (Tendinitis achilles)

M. Gastrocnemius consists of two muscle heads that come together to form a powerful tendon, the Achilles tendon. This tendon goes down the back of the calf and continues under the calcaneus with an attachment point on the tuber calcanei (heel bone).

One of the reasons why the inflammation occurs is through repeated overloading of the Achilles tendon.

Symptoms of the inflammation are manifested by pain when activating the Achilles tendon (heel strike and kick-off), pressure on the tendon and when the tendon is stretched. The tendon often feels thickened and uneven.

Common causes of Achilles tendonitis include:

  • Overtraining or unfamiliar use - “too much too soon”
  • Sudden change in training surface – e.g. grass to bitumen
  • Flat (overpronated) feet
  • High arch with tight Achilles tendon
  • Tighten hamstring (back of thigh) and calf muscles
  • Toe walking (or constantly wearing high heels)
  • Poorly supportive footwear
  • Hill running
  • Poor eccentric strength
