Blows and shocks to muscles can cause muscle fibers to break and bleeding to occur in the muscle tissue. The injury causes inflammation in the muscles and surrounding tissue, which causes muscle pain. The inflammation also helps to repair the muscle fibers that were damaged.

Stretch

Stretch injuries are caused by the tension in the muscle fibers becoming so great that they tear and bleeding occurs. The damaged muscle fibers cause an inflammation to form and the area becomes swollen and painful. In the case of severe stretch injuries, the repair can take up to three months. Our body repairs the stretch injury by forming a scar of connective tissue. This tissue is less elastic than the original muscle tissue and tears easily. It is therefore important to keep the tissue soft by stretching the muscle.

Muscle tension

Monotonous work or mental stress can cause increased muscle tension, because certain muscles become statically tense over time. Muscles that are tensed shut off their own blood supply and are neither supplied with oxygen nor get rid of waste products. This leads to a lack of oxygen and an accumulation of combustion products in the muscle tissue, which causes muscle pain.
